About the Job
Example of Duties:
Under general supervision, performs skilled inspection work in conducting fire and life safety inspection of new and existing commercial establishments to determine general compliance with the North Carolina fire Code and Fire prevention standards. Work involves reviewing and approving building construction and modification in conformance with fire code regulations, investigating fires to determine cause and origin, investigating complaints of fire safety hazards, maintaining records, and assisting in response to emergency situations. Reports to the Director, Emergency Management/Fire Marshal.

Education and Experience:
  • High School Diploma; 3 years’ experience in firefighting, fire investigations, or emergency response; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities.
  • Must be able to respond within 1 hour of being dispatched.
  • Valid North Carolina driver’s license required upon hire and duration of employment. Out of state driver’s license may only be accepted if the employee permanently resides in that state.
  • Trainee status will be applied until employee acquires the Fire Inspector Level I certification. (Grade 71 will be applied) Must be able to obtain a Level I Fire Inspectors certification within 2 years of hire or as soon as classes and state exam is offered.
  • When employee acquires the Fire Inspector Level I certification the pay grade will change to 72.
  • When employee acquires the Fire Inspector Level II certification the pay grade will change to 73.
  • When employee acquires the Fire Inspector Level III certification the pay grade will change to 74.
  • Fire Inspector III certification required within 6 years of hire and must maintain for the duration of employment.
  • Must take and successfully pass a pre-employment drug test, Motor Vehicle Records driver license check, as well as submit to random, reasonable suspicion, and post-accident drug and alcohol testing. A criminal background check must be completed by the County of Robeson for potential applicants.
