Example of Duties:

Under general supervision, performs specialized work of a legal nature in collecting delinquent taxes and fees for the County Tax Administration Department. Employee serves in an essential role in the Collection unit and is charged with the task of protecting the County’s interest in collecting tax obligations from taxpayers who have filed bankruptcy under the U. S. Bankruptcy Code. Work involves assisting contracted outside attorneys by providing timely delinquent property tax accounts with supporting documentation as needed; monitors and updates the foreclosure database. Prepares and files Estate claims and releases with the local Clerk of Court. Collects delinquent taxes by using enforcement measures provided by the North Carolina General Statutes. Employee assists the public, attorneys and paralegals with taxes, fees and interest due. Applies knowledge using guidance of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code, North Carolina General Statutes, Local Government resolutions and Tax Administration policies. Employee must exercise considerable tact and courtesy in frequent visitor and staff contacts. Reports to the Director, Collections/ Customer Service Division.

Education and Experience:

Requires a Bachelor’s degree in business, accounting, or of a legal nature in matters of delinquent tax collections supplemented by three to five years’ experience involving responsible administrative and detailed work in tax collection matters; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Must complete the North Carolina Fundamentals of Listing and Assessing, Fundamentals of Property Tax Collection, Advanced Collections, and Bankruptcy course within eighteen months.

Valid North Carolina driver’s license required upon hire and for the duration of employment. Out-of-state driver’s license will be accepted only if the individual is a permanent resident of that state..

Must take and successfully pass a pre-employment drug test, Motor Vehicle Records driver license check, as well as submit to reasonable suspicion and post-accident drug and alcohol testing. A criminal background check must be completed by the County of Robeson for potential applicants.
